MR, BWR and BWP explained
MR (Moisture Resistant) plywood suits dry internal furniture only. BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) handles occasional moisture. BWP (Boiling Water Proof), made to IS:710, uses phenol formaldehyde resin and is the grade specified for kitchens, bathroom vanities, utility areas and any surface exposed to standing water.
What drives BWP plywood price
Core timber species and density, number and quality of veneers, gap-free construction, resin content, preservative treatment against borers and termites, and thickness all move the rate. A suspiciously cheap "IS:710" board usually cuts corners on resin or core quality.
Simple checks before you accept delivery
Edge check: Look at the cut edge for gaps, overlaps and uneven veneers. A dense, gap-free core is a good sign.
Weight: Genuine BWP boards feel heavier than MR boards of the same thickness.
Boil test: Cut a small piece and boil it for a few hours. Genuine BWP will not delaminate; MR grade will separate.
Markings: Check for the IS:710 marking, batch details and warranty documentation on the invoice.
Thickness selection
18mm for carcasses, shutters and load-bearing shelves. 12mm for lighter shelving and backing. 6mm for back panels and drawer bottoms.
Pair it correctly
BWP plywood plus 1mm HPL laminate, bonded with a quality synthetic rubber contact adhesive and properly sealed edges, is the combination that lasts in Ahmedabad kitchens. Unsealed edges are the most common failure point regardless of grade.
